I am in need of a program/method of typing non-english characters on an english (US) keyboard. When I was using windows I had access to "Character Map" which allowed me to either copy/past or hit a keysequence to type a specific character (e.g. <alt>+0252 for German o with two dots above - umluat). I am primarily interested in German characters only, so I only need around 6 additional characters.

Does anyone know of a way to program the keyboard to accept a specific key sequence and print a specified character?

Right now, I do the old copy/past bit from a file that contains all the characters I need. It works, but it is quite cumbersome.

Any Ideas?

Looks like I am in a catch 22 situation.
I do not yet speak/read German.

I will try to decipher what I found.

xmodmap looks promising!

Thanks for the post.

BTW the website returns no information. I had to view via Google cache.

Thanks

In KDE, you can try Keyboard Layout in Regional and Accessibility (kcontrol)

If you are in X, use the compose key. Just type <compose>, <o>, <"> to get <ö> or <compose>, <s>, <s> to get <ß>. See https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?p=522023#522023 for how to get a compose key.

Or change your keyboard layout to "us_intl" in XF86Config. It makes the right Windows key the compose key. Additionally you get "dead keys" for several accents, so you can type <dead_diaeresis>, <o> to get <ö>. Again, use xkbprint to see where the additional resp. replaced keys on your keyboard are.

Thanks for everyones help. I now have the functionality that I need.

I added this to /etc/X11/XF86Config
Code:

       Option      "XkbOptions" "compose:menu"

now all I have to do is hit the "compose" (menu) key and a few other keys to get what I want.

eg

<compose> <s> <s> == ß
<compose> <A> <"> == Ä
<compose> <O> <"> == Ö
...

For more key sequences I fount /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/locale/*/Compose very useful.

I still do not have the Euro, but I can live without it for now!

Thanks again!
