I've got two Compaq XP1000's here, both with Gentoo on them. A `sho dev` on each of them has two different things for the CPU. Both are 667 Mhz speed and both have 4 MB of cache.
XP1000 #1: 21264A-9
XP1000 #2: 21264A-8
I have the Compaq 21264A hardware reference manual even, and I cannot find anywhere what the -8 and -9 suffix means. I assume different revision levels of the CPU??
Any ideas? _________________ Compaq XP1000 Alpha EV67 667Mhz w/ 2GB ECC

Do you know of any document that explains the difference? Does the -9 fix some bug or errata of the -8 chip? Is the -9 "better" in some way? I'd love to know what is the difference between the two.
FWIW the system board of the -8 chip has some wires that have been soldered on between some components, like a factory fix for some defect. The -9 system board does not have these add-on wire traces. All of the identifying numbers and markings between the two boards are identical, the serial numbers are the only other unique thing. _________________ Compaq XP1000 Alpha EV67 667Mhz w/ 2GB ECC

No, I don't. I'd be surprised if this information was publicly available.
My guess is that -9 is a newer revision and fixes something in the -8 revision, like the need for the soldered-on wires you found on the -8 CPU. _________________ My Wiki page |
