I'm having exactly the same problem (less any reference to KDE, since I'm using Gnome.)
Audacity launches fine from either the menu or the command line, and all functions seem to work fine -- except playback. I can edit the waveform, apply effects, zoom in, zoom out, and so on. However, the moment I try to play back, Audacity freezes. I have to close the window, it never comes back. When I do close the window I get a message that it is not responding, do I really want to force close it? When I open it back up I get a message requesting that I "recover" the project I had been working on, and that always seems to work fine.
When I start from the command line, these are the error messages I get right at launch:
Code: | ~ $ audacity
ALSA lib pcm.c:2217:(snd_pcm_open_noupdate) Unknown PCM cards.pcm.rear
ALSA lib pcm.c:2217:(snd_pcm_open_noupdate) Unknown PCM cards.pcm.center_lfe
ALSA lib pcm.c:2217:(snd_pcm_open_noupdate) Unknown PCM cards.pcm.side
ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:957:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) The dmix plugin supports only playback stream

Expression 'stream->playback.pcm' failed in 'src/hostapi/alsa/pa_linux_alsa.c', line: 3875
|
Once I hit "Play" these lines are added:
Code: | Expression 'paTimedOut' failed in 'src/os/unix/pa_unix_util.c', line: 387
Expression 'PaUnixThread_New( &stream->thread, &CallbackThreadFunc, stream, 1., stream->rtSched )' failed in 'src/hostapi/alsa/pa_linux_alsa.c', line: 2263

I last used Audacity with no trouble less than a month ago (June 17) and it worked fine then. I've probably done a world update or two since then, but no other changes to the system, and I've done revdep-rebuild each time I did a global update. _________________ Ignorance killed the cat. Hello,
I am installing Audacity right now. I am reading the available USE flags. Do you use the defaults one of the ebuild or you change them by a way or an other?
It could be helpfull to only use the defaults USE flags of the ebuild and/or change the version of Audacity for tests.
If you can open a file, that's mean that the format is supported by Audacity. Some formats support depend on the corresponding activated USE flags.
Because the freeze come when you try to play a sample, did you check your audio setup in Audacity and system? If Audacity do not find the good audio card for output, that can cause problems.
You can change from Alsa to OSS, or to Pulseaudio if it is serving. Something is wrong in the output configuration. _________________ Paul |

The USE flags I have active for Audacity are "alsa ffmpeg flac mp3 vorbis".
I only have ALSA active, with OSS compatibility. All other sound playback software seems to be working fine. _________________ Ignorance killed the cat. Curiosity was framed. |

The dmix plugin supports only playback stream

You can try the dmix plugin for alsa
Preferences => devices => playback => dmix
But with gnome you may want to enable pulseaudio support. i would enable it Global up to you.
emerge app-portage/gentoolkit
euse -a
euse -E pulseaudio
emerge -pavND world
here is what I have as an example;
media-plugins/alsa-plugins-1.0.25-r1 USE="pulseaudio -debug -ffmpeg -jack -libsamplerate -speex"
Also if you are using Gnome3 and want to use audacity with the default input and output I use pulseaudio to control that system-settings => sound _________________ http://dev.gentoo.org/~dabbott/ |

I tried the dmix option but it also freezes up Audacity. Exact same symptoms.
Here's what my sound setup appears like in the Preferences: Devices dialog:
Interface Host is set to ALSA (it's the only option.) It says "Using PortAudio V19-devel"
Playback device options are:
default
dmix
spdif
iec958
sysdefault
HDA ATI SM: ALC892 (hw:0,1)
I've tried all of them, with exactly the same results.
I'd really rather not open the pulseaudio can of worms. If there's no other way I might consider it, but that's never worked out well.
And no, I don't have Gnome 3 here. Not now, not ever.
What's strange is that I had not made *any* changes to my Audacity settings (until I started troubleshooting) and less than a month ago it was working perfectly. There have been some minor system upgrades, (just normal emerge world stuff) but nothing specific to audio.
I just tried alsaplayer to play a sound file with no trouble, so alsa itself seems to be correctly set up. _________________ Ignorance killed the cat. Curiosity was framed. |

After doing some investigation, it seems that the error messages all are from PortAudio, which is consistent with what appears in the preferences dialog. But when I checked, PortAudio was in portage but *not* installed on my system. Does Audacity provide its own copy? I installed PortAudio from portage to see if that would help, but it hasn't made any difference. _________________ Ignorance killed the cat. Curiosity was framed. |

Well, I had 2.0.0 installed when the problem appeared. I changed it over to ~amd64 once I started having trouble and installed 2.0.1, but that didn't make any difference.
I didn't have any trouble with it until just recently either. Same version, and a month ago it was fine. I hadn't tried it since then until last week, when the problem appeared. _________________ Ignorance killed the cat. Curiosity was framed. |

Well, if I'd been a Windows user I would have been able to fix this right off. With Windows, when in doubt, reboot, right?
It was a device unavailability problem. Someone on the Audacity forums suggested that I log out and log back in and then try it. That didn't work, but a complete reboot did the trick. _________________ Ignorance killed the cat. Curiosity was framed. |
