Gentoo prefix: sys-devel/gettext-0.18.1.1-r2 fails to build

Basically, I have something misconfigured, and as a result, I'm not able to build gettext on Mac OS X Lion. The dev is telling me that I'm not going to get support for this problem and that I should re-bootstrap. That seems rather drastic and unnecessary to me, but I don't understand his other suggestions.

Does anyone understand what's going on here? Help, please!
