well.. it turns out that the reason why i didnt know what to put for kernel version is because there isnt anything about the kernel in the /boot directory. thats because the kernel didnt build sucessfully, why i dont know. i checked the log and it says there is a [segmentation error] followed by a few [error 2]'s this all happens when it says make dep. then it just quits back to #
now i have no idea what to do, i tried emerge -k sys-kernel/gentoo-sources
then did emerge -k genkernel
followed by genkernel
and i still get that error, not sure what to do, please help. thanks |

you should do #genkernel --config
and config youre kernel for what you need usually if it fails during make dep i think that means there are options enabled that require another option be enabled that isnt
try from youre /usr/src/linux directory after emerging the kernel sources #cat /proc/config >> ./.config then you can probably get away with just running #genkernel
without doing any config however this kernel will take alot longet to build as it has all the scsi and watchdog stugg enable prbly stuff you dont need i would suggest learning how to config a kernel and running the #genkernel --config |
