I ran into this first while trying to emerge openoffice, one of the deps that comes up is java-sdk-docs

Quote:

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating dependencies ...done!
[ebuild N ] dev-java/java-sdk-docs-1.3.1
[ebuild N ] dev-java/blackdown-jdk-1.3.1-r7 +doc
[ebuild N ] app-office/openoffice-1.0.2 +gnome -kde

but when it tries to emerge the java-sdk-docs I get this:
Quote:

!!! ERROR: dev-java/java-sdk-docs-1.3.1 failed.
!!! Function src_unpack, Line 17, Exitcode 0
!!! Please download j2sdk-1_3_1-doc.zip from http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.3/docs.html and move it to /usr/portage/distfiles

I have the blackdown JDE installed already and am perfectly happy with that, why do I need the j2sdk from Sun just so I can install the blackdown development kit? It's not making any sense to me, anyone got any tips?

maybe, just maybe, since i am new to gentoo

it is asking you for the documentation from sun, but it is still showing blackdown as one of the dependencies, which, as you state, you already have.
since docs do not require too much configuring, you might want to download the documentation (i think it is 30mb) and install it, just the documentation
and then see what the dependencies are for openoffice
if it did not work, then unmerge the docs.

another thing that you might try is removing the "doc" from the USE in the /etc/make.conf (add "-doc" in it)

if you do not understand any of the crap that i wrote, please tell me, and i will try to explain it better later

hope this helps[/quote]

You may not want to update you make.conf USE flag to remove "doc" since you may not want to globally disable documentation.

You can disable the doc USE flag on the command-line by using:

Code:

bash %  USE="-doc" emerge openoffice

You can do this with any emerge, and any USE flag. One the emerge is done, any other merge will go back to the ones in your make.conf, unless you specify the USE flags on the command-line again.
