Hi,
I have a problem with installing nvidia-drivers package. When I tried to install newest drivers the message was:
Quote: | You are currently installing a version of nvidia-drivers that is
* known not to work with a video card you have installed on your
* system. If this is intentional, please ignore this. If it is not
* please perform the following steps:
*
* Add the following mask entry to /etc/portage/package.mask by
* echo ">=x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-97.0.0" >> /etc/portage/package.mask

so I masked latest drivers and run:
Code: | emerge -1 x11-base/xorg-drivers |
and got this output:
Code: |

Can anyone help me solve this problem, please? (It's my first Gentoo installation...)

you either have configured kernel sources matching your
kernel or the correct set of kernel headers installed
on your system.
If you are using a Linux 2.6 kernel, please make sure
you have configured kernel sources matching your kernel
installed on your system. If you specified a separate
output directory using either the "KBUILD_OUTPUT" or
the "O" KBUILD parameter, make sure to specify this
directory with the SYSOUT environment variable or with
the equivalent nvidia-installer command line option.
Depending on where and how the kernel sources (or the
kernel headers) were installed, you may need to specify
their location with the SYSSRC environment variable or
the equivalent nvidia-installer command line option.

MehyaM,
Welcome to Gentoo.
Code: | *** Unable to determine the target kernel version. *** | is usually caused by the /usr/src/linux symlink missing, which is how external kernel modules, find the kernel to build against, or if the link is present, it points to a kernel that has not been configured, so the version information is absent.
Look at the output of Code: | readlink /usr/src/linux | andin your case, you want them to show the same kernel version as you want to install the nvidia-drivers for the kernel you are running. If you unpicked a liveCD to get the kernel binary you are using, you cannot install nvidia-drivers as you won't have a configured kernel source tree. _________________ Regards,

Thanks for fast reply.
it's weird, because I have fresh install (kernel manually configured and compiled) link is present and points to used kernel.
Code: | mayhems-gentoo ~ # readlink /usr/src/linux
linux-3.3.8-gentoo
mayhems-gentoo ~ # uname -a
Linux mayhems-gentoo 3.3.8-gentoo #1 SMP Fri Aug 3 18:34:40 CEST 2012 i686 AMD Athlon(TM) XP 2000+ AuthenticAMD GNU/Linux

Newer driver was compiled successfully but with the notice about wrong version mentioned in the first post. Should I uninstall the newer drivers first? What is the best method? --unmerge or --prune?
Also I checked all required kernel configurations from http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/nvidia-guide.xml and everything is OK, only "Userspace VESA VGA graphics support" is not checked. Could be this the problem? |

If your hardware is old enough that it has been removed from the proprietary drivers, it might be old enough to be well supported by the open driver. Did you pick the proprietary driver because you need features not present in the open driver? |

I'm very sure the 96xx driver hasn't been updated to work with newest kernels. The modifications needed to get the driver to compile are quite small, so you could do them. But there's another problem - X. The 96xx driver supports X up to 1.10 and no further.
Basically, you might be better served by nouveau. |

MehyaM,
The nVidia part of the build system is broken for 3 series kernels.
Google knows of patches dor 3.3.0_rc1 but the kernel has changed further since then and they don't work with with 3.4.5 which is what I have today.
You can file a bug at bugs.gentoo.org - see if there is one already that you can add to. The build system is text files, so anyone can edit it, however, if its not well maintained now, its only going to get worse ad fewer and fewer people need this driver.
The support from Xorg 1.11 and on is unlikely to ever be fixed. nVidia must do that as the changes need to be made inside the binary blob.
So, you can fix the build system and have an out of date Xorg and friends or you can try another driver like nouveau. _________________ Regards,
