Trouble with step 16.1 - Emerging Kernel Sources

When I run the following command I get the error at the end.

# emerge -k sys-kernel/gentoo-sources

* Cannot find $EPATCH_SOURCE! Value for $EPATCH_SOURCE is:

I try ignoring the errors and issuing the following command:

#emerge -k genkernel

Which runs without error. I continue to the next command:

# genkernel

/usr/src/linux doesn't seem to exist. Please emerge your favorite
kernel source tree first.

But I get that error. Any suggestions?
