I've got a TrueMobile 1150 Mini-PCI card running in my Dell Latitude D800 which apparently works with the "orinoco_cs" module according to http://www.marlow.dk/tech/dell_latitude_d600.php. I think it's quite close to being configured correctly, but something is still not working. The access point I'm trying to connect to does not use encryption and I don't know its ESSID, but that should be auto-detected from what I'm told. I'm unable to get any type of IP address from the access point (which is setup for DHCP); I haven't tried statically configuring my IP address. All of the below things I've tried have identical results when I'm in range of the access point or out of range, indicating to me that there's no connection. I found some information on another Gentoo forum (https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=82883) that gave some basic steps for configuring the card. However, these didn't solve my issue (although I'm currently using the /etc/pcmcia/wlan-ng.conf file listed there). The following is some information on driver versions I'm using which may be of use:

Kernel version: 2.4.22-pre6-ac1
Orinoco driver version: currently using 0.11b with scanning patch (have tried without patch as well), have also tried 0.13d which came with my kernel
wireless-tools version: 26
linux-wlan-ng version: 0.2.0
pcmcia-cs version: 3.2.4

I really don't know if the scanning patch is required for what I want to setup, but it's configured in case I need it. To start my wireless NIC, I issue the following commands (I will automate these once it's working):

insmod pcmcia_core
insmod yenta_socket
/etc/init.d/pcmcia start

If my /etc/conf.d/net file has eth1 included (with DHCP), two high beeps are emitted. If eth1 is excluded from /etc/conf.d/net, there's a high beep and then a low beep.

After starting PCMCIA services (assuming eth1 is configured for DHCP in /etc/conf.d/net), "ifconfig" shows (MAC address omitted in this example):

eth1 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr
UP BROADCAST NOTRAILERS RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:0 errors:5 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:100
RX bytes:0 (0.0 b) TX bytes:3220 (3.1 Kb)
Interrupt:11 Base address:0x100

The output of "iwconfig" right after starting PCMCIA services is:

eth1 IEEE 802.11-DS ESSID:"" Nickname:"HERMES I"
Mode:Managed Frequency:2.427GHz Access Point: 44:44:44:44:44:44
Bit Rate:2Mb/s Tx-Power=15 dBm Sensitivity:1/3
Retry limit:4 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
Encryption key:off
Power Management:off
Link Quality:0/92 Signal level:134/153 Noise level:134/153
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0

While dhcpcd is trying to get an IP, the following is written to /var/log/kernel/current:

Oct 3 22:13:37 [kernel] eth1: Tx error, status 4 (FID=01E3)
Oct 3 22:13:41 [kernel] eth1: Tx error, status 4 (FID=01CF)
Oct 3 22:13:50 [kernel] eth1: Tx error, status 4 (FID=01BB)
Oct 3 22:14:06 [kernel] eth1: Tx error, status 4 (FID=01A7)

The output of "iwconfig" after dhcpcd has timed out is:

eth1 IEEE 802.11-DS ESSID:"" Nickname:"HERMES I"
Mode:Managed Frequency:2.457GHz Access Point: 00:00:00:00:00:00
Bit Rate:11Mb/s Tx-Power=15 dBm Sensitivity:1/3
Retry limit:4 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
Encryption key:off
Power Management:off

When I try "/etc/init.d/wlan start", I get the following (after adding a /etc/modules.d/wlan file that contains "alias eth1 orinoco_cs" and running "modules-update"):

* Starting WLAN devices...
wlanctl-ng: Operation not supported
Failed to enable the device, exitcode= 1 .
cat: /proc/net/p80211/eth1/wlandev: No such file or directory
wlanctl-ng: Operation not supported
wlanctl-ng: Operation not supported
error: Autojoin indicated failure! [ ok ]

I can post kernel messages, lspci output, my kernel config, the contents of other config files, etc. if required. Let me know if you think they would be useful. Thanks for your help.

My TM 1150 is now working. All I needed to do was enable the wireless NIC using Fn+F2. Don't I feel stupid. Sorry for the unneeded thread.
