Kmail filters causing the system to freeze up.

For a while now I've been unable to use my kmail fillters because they caused the entire box to freeze up.
I decided to look into the Mail directory and make sure that all the file permissions were set properly.
Strangely when I tried I got this,

chown -R tom:users *
chown: failed to get attributes of `inbox/cur/1046206334.9593.72h6:2,S': Permission denied
chown: failed to get attributes of `inbox/cur/1046255061.1867.Fp06:2,S': Permission denied

I can't even remove the files as root.

Any idea how to get rid of them?
