Hi all,

I have recently been having a few minor disconnection problems (every 10 days or so) where my connection is just randomly cut, no real explanation in the Gentoo Linux (kernel 2.4.20-gentoo-r6) logs. Anyway what i need is a method to reconnect every time my link gets disconnected. I start the command "pppd call speedtch' for the PPPoATM connection to do its stuff, this bit works absolutely fine, but when i tried putting it as a cron job to run every minute it did not seem to work.

"persist" is already in the pppd script, anybody else know of any software or anything that willl reconnect my connection each time it goes down?

Kind Regards
Mark Rawson

Hi Mark,

Don't know if this will help, but in addition to 'persist' in the ppp options, I have 'maxfail 0', which means pppd will keep trying to connect indefinitely, until it's successful (the default, I think, is to stop trying after 10 failed tries).

This helped me, since whenever I lose my ADSL PPPoE connection, sometimes it takes a lot of tries before pppd is able to reconnect successfully. If in the logs it looks like pppd tries to reconnect a few times, then stops trying, the maxfail setting might help.

Thanks for the quick reply, I have added that line to my pppd dial script and restarted pppd, so i shall see how it does and hopefully it will work. If anyone else has any other idea(s), thn i welcome then.
