Wireless heads:
Problem statement:
I have a DSL connection coming into my apt on the first floor. Connected to it, I have a Netgear Wireless Router MR814. If I could run a network cable into the basement, i would run it out of the uplink port on my Netgear router. However, it's way too far. So, I'd like to put another wireless router/switch/hub in the basement that will uplink to the one on the first floor. I don't want to buy seperate wireless cards for each PC in the basement, because it is cheaper and more expandable to run wires off of another wireless r/s/h.
Questions:
Should I take an old PC and build a bridge out of it, with one wireless card, and one network card? Or would it be possible to buy another similar router to the Netgear, and uplink it to the router on the first floor? If so, would two NAT's in my house screw up my connection to the internet, or would it still be transparent? What steps and settings should i configure to properly uplink?
Any answers will be greatly appreciated, and cookies sent to your house...
THANKS

There are commercially avaliable wireless bridges avaliable if you dont mind spending a little money. It would be pretty sweet to have a PC as a bridge, and either way you can do passthrough of dhcp requests and things of that sort, (I know apple's airport does this and I know you can with a linux box) but having multiple layers of NAT should be no problem unless you need access to all of your machines over the lan.
If you are still trying to get this working, post back and I'll try to help you out more. _________________ http://ckdake.com/ |
