"emerge system" failed, ??!!?

when i type:

emerge --pretend system
it gives a list of packages, then a red one, with a [block] instead of [ebuild]
the package is called dev-perl/ExtUtils-MakeMaker i think, might be sys-perl, or dev-lang
it is blocked by perl, but requires perl to install.

I had the same problem first time I tried emerge world (it confused the hell out of me), but the guide shows you how to fix it
