I managed to freeze my machine with grip tonite and had to hit the reset button. When the machine restarted my apps were all bigger. I have used xvidtune to confirm I'm still running at the res I was before I restarted, 1600x1200. This was the first time the machine has been rebooted since I added my 21" monitor a few days ago. Of course when I edited my XF86Config for the new monitor a couple days ago I did a ctrl-alt-Backspace but did not restart the computer.

After the restart/crash some apps did not change much in size while others are much larger. Opera barely changed and I don't think gkrellm did at all while nicotine, GAIM, and xchat seem massive now.

Any thoughts on why this has happened and how to reverse it?

And just to confirm I don't just mean the fonts - everything about these apps has grown.

Opera is qt-based and GAIM/X-Chat is gtk-based...
Is it possible you have upgraded some Gnome/gtk-releated packages?

I guess it's possible...maybe it was a dependency of something I emerged and didn't notice? Regardless I'm not a big fan of the change.
