After upgrading a machine to Gnome 2.4 (including the xfree update which merged xfs in to the xfree ebuild) the only text which shows is the GDM text around the log in box. All other text, the login box itself included, is completely missing, not showing at all. It doesn't even look to be transparent, because the menus and boxes are all sized as if the strings are zero length.
At first I thought it was a problem with xfs (which had been removed from the rc-update system during the upgrade) but starting this makes no difference.

I've just tried loading a gnome application on a remote desktop with the same result so it looks like its gnome rather than X. |

Recompiling pango solved it, but I think there is something wrong with the gnome2.4 dependencies because it failed part way through and I had to emerge the latest xfree and restart it. I suspect that I needed to do this at the beginning though. |
