So the Love sources actually improve upon the recent changes to the scheduler in 2.6?! Wow, I'm VERY impressed with the speed of 2.6 since test5-r11, it leaves me wondering, how can it be better? I'm not doubting, just wondering.
Perhaps I should just try'em out and see for myself. I think I'll give it a go tonight. _________________ -Lunchy |

In my honest, nad very biased, opinion - yes Nick Sched is WAY better than Con's tweaks.
it's simpler, more efficent within the current parameters and it does well under load.
I wish I could take credit for the code, but Nick Piggin (of AS scheduler fame) did this piece of art - he's taken first place as my favorite Linux hacker, he's probably the most friendly hacker i've talked to ever, and he's easy to get to do shit work like debugging |

i know there are 4 (ones i've heard correct me if wrong!)
1) Vanilla Sources
2) something called teh mm sources?
3) Love Sources
4) Gentoo Sources
What are the diffences after all they use the same 2.6 kernel right? or what?

vanilla - from www.kernel.org, straight development kernel (2.6test6 as of writing)
mm - patched version of development kernel (2.6test6-mm4)
love - straight development kernel with Lovechild's own patches
gentoo - heavily patched 2.4 kernel, standard gentoo kernel. currently at 2.4.20-r7

I'm trying to apply the Love patch to the mm4 sources, but it says that all of the patches have already been applied, is that normal, should I be hitting 'yes' or 'no' to reapply? Is there a fast way to his "yes for all" or "no for all"? _________________ -Lunchy |

Gentoo sources is kernel 2.4 - we ignore this piece of ancient crap for now.
Vanilla is Linus' tree - aka mainline
mm-sources is Andrew Morton's tree - he's appointed the 2.6 maintainer once Linus moves on to 2.7 - he carries lots of strange patches, mainly it serves as a testing ground for new stuff.
Love Sources is my personal tree, it's based on mm-sources but has a new process scheduler and other nice little patches - it was started because I needed a desktop 2.6 kernel this was before Con Kolivas's interactive tweaks hit mainline. I didn't really like Con's tweaks as much as I would like, so I picked up Nick Piggins' process scheduler and right now -love is the only kernel that's used as a testing ground for his work so any testers are valued highly.
Love is experimental without being uber breaky - I haven't seen an oops with -love in versions I've released to the public.
Love is also the testing ground for Reiser4 - sadly this is missing atm since the kernel has changed loads since 2.6.0-test4 for which the lastest Reiser4 snapshot was released... but I promise it will return shortly. |

For safety reasons -love is always a diff against the milestone releases so it applies to -test6, I do this because andrew morton sometimes does several releases within a week and people might get confused.. Also it gives me the option to go back to -wli which I used to be based on, or rolling back to a safe -mm kernel, since Andrew sometimes does "be careful with this one" releases. |
