The Mayans can't be right that the world is ending because we have a new Live{USB,DVD} on the way and if they are right then we can at least see all the latest software Gentoo Linux has to offer before we go out with a bang.
stay tune...

Dr. Julia Hoffman (Helena Bonham Carter): A vampire!?
Elizabeth Collins-Stoddard (Michelle Pfeiffer): keep your voice down. What on earth are you talking about?
Oh, spare me. I had him under hypnosis for hours.

Silly Gentoo...
We all know that the world ends on January 19, 2038 (or, at least, civilization gets catapulted back in time to 1901). |

I wonder why bittorrent was discontinued?
While I applaud it's available (and funny that we'd be "pirating" Gentoo) I wish that there was an official channel to distribute via bittorrent...
The alternate worry is whether or not this is an adulterated copy. Sure it may be free but it still can be contaminated...
I'll download anyway and md5 against the real copy... _________________ Intel Core i7 2700K/Radeon R7 250/24GB DDR3/256GB SSD

Bittorent does not mean pirating. And I wish this new Gentoo ISO image was available as an official torrent, too. |

Of course it doesn't, but when grabbing files from TPB it can get a little suspicious... _________________ Intel Core i7 2700K/Radeon R7 250/24GB DDR3/256GB SSD

Sorry, I didn't see gsom's post.
You're right. This is why I'd like there was an official Gentoo torrent service: to avoid users using TPB or similar websites. |

Just get the ISO wherever you want and the .DIGESTS file from the official source. Safe as houses.

And if my word means anything to anyone, the torrent file I got from TPB yesterday
Code: | doujima:~$ md5sum Gentoo_Linux_releases_20121221_LiveDVD_-_End_Of_World_Edition_\(x86\).7951601.TPB.torrent
23bbe01823efbc9cc2736fc94c6b5c60 Gentoo_Linux_releases_20121221_LiveDVD_-_End_Of_World_Edition_(x86).7951601.TPB.torrent
|
The files I downloaded from the torrent did end up matching the official digests on gentoo.org. However I wasn't able to verify the gpg signature (couldn't find where to get the public key of the signer)... Ah well close enough, as long as it matches one thing and gentoo.org didn't get hacked... _________________ Intel Core i7 2700K/Radeon R7 250/24GB DDR3/256GB SSD

Gentoo's bittorrent server died. And it's looking like it's not going to be replaced.
You can also get a detached gpg signed file from the official downloads to verify the integrity of your torrent download.
gpg signing key info are listed here:

If somebody doesn't want to visit TPB they can use magnet link.
If gentoo livedvd developers interested in torrent links I can make them as soon as possible and we can place them in official announce. |

Very nice, but this thing is a memory hog. Tried it out in virtualbox and found out that it needs 1gig of memory to finish booting, and if you use some of the bigger apps on it then it needs 1.5gigs of memory. |

I confirm this. I was not able to start x86 version on VirtualBox guest with 512MB RAM. System starts ok, but Xorg crashes. |

1) Using Seamonkey within Gnome, I visited the KUAF Radio "ways to listen" and found mplayer printed half the stdout in Russian or Cyrllic chars, the other half in preferred English chars.
2) Nice to see a different Window Manager KDE as the default, but my preferences are DWM, XFCE, and then Awesome window manager. The Gentoo configuration of Gnome-3 seems a little cleaner or navigable then Fedora's LiveDVD Gnaome-3 version. Sorry, Cinnamon and other Gnome spin-off's, although well intentioned forks, don't seem to be configuring their stuff for ease of use and making usability more complicated then it's extremely complicated successor, Gnome-3. Overall, for a basic functioning Window Manager, XFCE still rules -- and seems usable for Windows 95 folks too. XFCE just doesn't have all the auto-magical stuff KDE has. XFCE also breaks the system tools from the system preferences for easier distinguishing between the two, including the XFCE start menu is just extremely more well usable then any other Window Manager's start menu. As to why all of them Window Managers got rid of of the default "Shaded Windows", did a MS Developer hijack all the Window Manager source code?
3) No sample Music provide! In order to test or experience sound, users will likely need to "locate" system sound files. Although, a /home/gentoo/Music/ was already provided. Might I suggest providing at least three small Symphony vorbis/mp3 files?
4) Some Really Really Great Artwork! When booting, it was was also very easy to tap F2 as well as other streamlining tasks. Only issue, virtual tty1 was cleared after booting, destroying any possible error boot messages on terminal. Logging in was easy and changing the root password was easy, but a beginner may have issues if there's no default password.
5) Good range of popular software, boosting lots of features. Just noticed gvim and emacs using a basic old style X? widgets, instead of gtk-1/gtk-2/gtk-3. _________________ Roger
