Hi all, I have this weird problem I would really appreciate a hint on where to start looking for a solution! I have searched forums and such but no go so far...
It's about printing to a corporate (university) printer server that require other authentication credentials than what I use on my local machine. I normally use xfce but I have both kde and gnome installed, the behavior is identical whatever session I choose.
What works: When I use evince to print pdf's I get a dialog asking for credentials, allowing me to specify the appropriate pair and printing works as it's supposed to... Currently this is my only known workaround, to export to pdf and print with evince, which however is somewhat inhibiting!
What doesn't work: When I try to print from any other application, e.g. okular, libreoffice, inkscape, firefox, etc. (I haven't tried all that should be able to print) the dialog doesn't show and thus printing fails with erroneous authentication in cups log and a paused printer. What seems to happen is that cups and/or the application persists in using my local login when communicating with the printer server.
How come evince shows the dialog when authentication fails and not the other applications?
How can I "force" all applications to ask for credentials when printing?
Any clues?

No one?
I seem to have tried every combination of AuthType in cupsd.conf, but somehow I don't think the problem is there (I mean, it works for evince [= gnome Document Viewer] with AuthType Default !)
I sense the problem lies in the negotiation between applications and "the system", but what part of the system?. Is it dbus, consolekit, polkit, or whatever? In what way differs evince from all other applications when it comes to negotiating credentials? I don't know where to start looking!
Am I the only one with this problem?
Beginning to feel somewhat dejected... because I'd like terribly much to be able to print from libreoffice and inkscape...
