Ho installato il 2.6.0-pre6-mm2 sul mio server e sto cercando di capire se le prestazioni sono inferiori rispetto al 2.4.22-gs
Se faccio top compare anche la voce io-wait.
Nel 2.4 questa voce era "inglobata" in idle o era inclusa nelle altre voci (user,system,nice)?
(Spero la prima, ma temo la seconda  ) |

IO-WAIT dovrebbe essere un'estensione che prima non c'era (o meglio, non era visibile)... Credo che sia stata presa da Solaris  (e da domani SUN accusa IBM di avergli fregato il codice uhahuaahua).
CMQ: non ho capito qual'e' la tua domanda in particolare...

Non riesco a capire come confrontare le prestazioni con il kernel 2.6 e con il 2.4
In genere usavo top per controllare l'utilizzo della CPU durante varie task, tipo copiare file attraverso samba, masterizzare un cd, ecc. guardando la percentuale di cpu in idle durante tali operazioni
Ad esempio: traferisco un file tra 2 pc usando samba.
Nel 2.4 vedo un 50% della cpu utilizzata, nel 2.6.0 0% idle, ma utilizzo utente pressochè equivalente al 2.4 e un 50% di IO-wait
Il fatto che con il 2.4 ho un idle del 50% e con il 2.6 ho un idle del 0% dipende dalla nuova voce IO-wait (e quindi non devo confrontare i 2 idle time) o semplicemente il 2.6 ha prestazino molto in feriori sulla mia macchina?
(ancora meglio che programma posso utilizzare per fare un benchmark?) |

Fare un benchmark e' sempre un task particolare.
Il top al momento non e' il massimo, ma almeno hai notato una sottile differenza: l'IO-WAIT indica che il pc sta aspettando delle operazioni di INPUT/OUTPUT (disco, rete, ecc), quindi l'indicazione che avevi nel 2.4 non era poi tanto precisa.
