After just emerging the ati-drivers i tried to run startx to no avail:

Code:
 Using vt 7
(WW) fglrx: No matching Device Section for instance (BusID PCI:3:0:1) found
modprobe: Can't locate module fglrx
[drm] failed to load kernel module "fglrx"
(EE) fglrx(0): DRIScreenInit failed!
could not init font path element /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc/, removing from list!

Fatal sever error:
could not open default font 'fixed'

......

XIO: fatal IO error 104 (conection reset by peer) on X sever ":0.0"
after 0 requests (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining.

Did startx work before you emerged ati-drivers? What does ~/.xinitrc and /etc/X11/XF86config look like? What the is kernel module fglrx?

x has worked, i had emerged ati-drivers but agpgart wasn't working so i didn't have 3d . i have since upgraded to 2.4.20-gaming-rc5 kernel and have not yet got it to work.

i dont have a ~/.xinitrc file and my XF86Config-4 file is to big to retype (i'm on another computer - windows)

well... if you compile a new kernel, be sure to rebuild anything that installs as a kernel modules (which I suppose is the case for fglrx).

try this and keep us informed... i'll be glad if I can help you.

ps: bear in mind it'll be hard for anyone to help you without seeing some parts of your X config file...
