CWA,
I assume you have just rebooted into your gentoo install.
Did you compile support for your ethernet card directly into the kernel, or did you compile it as a module? Or did you use genkernel?
Type ifconfig, this will tell you which interfaces are configured, you should see one labeled eth0 (if your first [only] ethernet card successfully loaded.
Can you see the link lights for the ethernet card? are they lit?
More questions to follow, need to know more specifics once you answer these general questions.

laright, I used genkernel. The light on the ethernet is on for a little while, but then goes off. |
