have you tried commenting ACCEPT_KEYWORDS out in your /etc/make.conf?

On my system ACCEPT_KEYWORDS is commented out.

The full error output is:

I'm using the 1.4 x86 isos to build an Athlon system.

I had this problem when I tried to update portage before bootstrapping.

The quick solution :
Start over, and don't emerge anything prior to running bootstrap.sh (emerge sync is OK).

I think this is related to the new versions of python that are available.

I thought I might try another CD set i686 instead of x86. I guessed it would make no difference as kirja is getting the same problem with ppc.

However I already downloaded and burnt the iso before noticing that so I tried it anyway and it's working. Very strange. I have to install another box in a few days (a celeron 466) so I'll try the x86 cd's on that and see if it works.

I also managed to get the bootstrap script to work. Instead of using the basic 70mb cd and downloading the stage1 tarball I used the livecd and the stage1 tarball from there.
