I'm not exactly sure if XMule is still under development, but the new AMule in portage is an awsome port of EMule.

I'm using it right now.

don't you have any memory problems ? on my computer, amule keeps growing in memory (up to 80%), attacks the swap (50% for now) and completely slow my box down.

amule is not awsome as long it shuts down all the time !

Are you using 1.0.8? It fixes at least one socket bug that caused it to crash.
