first of all, i am totaly new to linux.
I am having troubles installing gentoo
my computer:
P4 Hyperthreading 2.6
Asus P4C800 Deluxe ( Intel 875P )
2x256 Twinmos DDR 400
Sony CDRW 52/24/52
Cordless desktop navigator
...
my problem:
when i load the kernel ( even with nousb, nodetect, nohotplug, noapic )
i dont see any movement, so I press F2, and there it says:
hdd: task_no_data_intr: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error }
hdd: task_no_data_intr: error=0x04 { DriveStatusError }
and the computer freezes
I tried the 1.4 for P4, and the basic version
then i tried the 1.2 version, but it still doesn't boot.
the memtest program from the cd does run, and i can also run the knoppix cd.
does somebody has an idea ?? |

It sounds like whatever kernel the Gentoo LiveCD uses doesn't like the device hdd, which is the slave unit on the secondary IDE channel.
You could disconnect the offending device.
How are all your drives configured? E.g. hard disk on Primary IDE Master etc etc?? _________________ Jingle Jangle Jewellery |

maybe disabling dma helps, too. therefore boot the cd with
'gentoo ide=nodma' |
