Hepp!
I'm experiencing strange problems on my desktop computer, running "stable" gentoo (no ACCEPT_KEYWORDS) w/gentoo-sources-r7. Just installed a new PSU 350W, and CPU-fan, trying to keep the noice down. The machine is not overclocked (P4 1.6GHz with 512 MB memory),
Since installing this stuff, the machine keeps freezing up, reacting to nothing at all. I'm able to switch between the consoles, but everything else is frozen. I once had top running when this happened, and it showed 99% idle. I was not able to end top, and it continued reloading itself, and continously showed 99% idle. This is also shown in the CPU-temperature, which stays at the low 30 degrees. Checks this in the bios when I have rebooted.
Ruling out poor cooling from the new CPU-fan, I then wonder if my brand new Fortron-Source FSP350-60PN(PF) PSU is failing. Is system freeze an indicator on this? Where can I start debugging?
I have now disconnected 2x IBM Deskstar 80GB disks to see if the problem persists.
Appreciate any response.

Try different kernel like ck-sources or vanilla-sources. I had similar problems about week ago with gentoo-sources. I'm now using ck-sources with no problems so far.. and performance is better |

Strangely, the problem has gone, and I can't say that I understand why. I disabled hdb and hdd, which were my IBM disks, from the bios, expecting to live without these disks for now. But I am still able to mount them, and have full read-write access to them.
Strange, but since there aint no problem eny more, I'm happy :) |
