i tried to rip a cd with grip and abcde and both gave me errors about not being able to read the cdrom. I can mount and read data cd's, but can't audio cd's. I realize audio doens't use iso9660..so how do i access an audio cd? is there anything extra that needs to be built into the kernel? |

I haven't used grip or abcde myself so I guess I can't be very helpful here.
I use cdparanoia for cd ripping and it needs a scsi cdrom (or scsi emulation, that's what I'm using and it works.)

Make sure you're using the right cd-rom device. It probably defaults to /dev/cdrom... which probably isn't set up correctly.
But! Even if it is... you probably don't have permission as a user to access it. So... (if you're -sure- that your cd-rom device is /dev/cdrom)... run as root:
Code: | # chmod 777 /dev/cdrom |
If your device isn't /dev/cdrom, or you're not sure, put a data CD in and mount it. Then type "df" and see what device is mounted as the cdrom. _________________ Even a stopped clock gives the right time twice a day. |

been there dont that. It uses /dev/cdroms/cdrom0 and i've changed the permissions on that device to 777. while running grip it prints to the terminal "unable to open cdrom drive." when i use abcde in root, then it can rip the cd, however the same is not true for grip. something has to be messed up here... |

Are you sure that gRip is configured to use the device /dev/cdroms/cdrom0 ? _________________ Even a stopped clock gives the right time twice a day. |

I guess you have multiple cd-roms then? How else would you be mounting a data CD while an audio CD is in the drive?
Also... which device is which? Maybe the audio cd isn't in cdrom0... maybe it's in cdrom1 or something? Which device is the data CD in? _________________ Even a stopped clock gives the right time twice a day. |
