Hello
I have recently installed Gentoo for the first time. It took me about two days, because i got a lot of errors...however, now there's one big problem remaining. When i start Gentoo, it shows a lot of initialization text. That'äs pretty usual. But when it gets right past the lines
Gentoo Linux; http://www.gentoo.org
Copyright 2001-2003 Gentoo Technologies, Inc.; Distributed under the GPL, it prints out
* Mounting proc at /proc..
..and nothing happend. It just stands there, hour after hour...quite boring. My question is, why does it do that? I want this thing to work properly..=)
I had WinXP installed on my computer before i installed Gentoo. So, at hda1, you'll find WinXP. hda2 is my 32 Mb boot-partition. hda3 is the 512 Mb swap-partition, and hda4 is my root partition, which use reiserfs as file system.
I think you may need to see my /etc/fstab, so here it is (some parts of it, at least):
Code: |
/dev/hda2 /boot ext3 noauto,noatime 1 1
/dev/hda4 / reiserfs noatime,notail 0 0
/dev/hda3 none swap sw 0 0
/dev/cdroms/cdrom0 /mnt/cdrom iso9660 noauto,ro 0 0
proc /proc proc defaults 0 0
none /dev/shm tmpfs defaults 0 0
|
The proc-line actually was like this before:
Code: |
none /proc proc defaults 0 0
|
but a friend of my told me to change it because it didn't work. But, it don't work anyway, so i really don't know what to do.
I installed stage 3 from the live-cd, optimized for Athon XP. The cd's where named:
athlon-xp-1.4-20030911-cd1.iso
athlon-xp-1.4-20030911-cd2.iso
Thanks in advance!

you probably forgot to build proc into youre kernel not as a module, build it into the kernel. the second way is right by the way. give youre friend a piece of yer mind |

My friend got online again, and he helped me out with that one. But now there's another problem, that he can't solve. Right after
*Mounting proc at /proc..
it reads
modprobe: Note: /etc/modules.conf is more recent than /lib/modules/2.4.20-gentoo-r7/modules.dep
modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module mousedev
...im just as stuck as before |

got the same error;
i had to reboot from gentoo live-cd,
mounted my root-hdd under /mnt/gentoo, then created /mnt/gentoo/proc with "mkdir /mnt/gentoo/proc" (and yes!), and next time it worked...
about your module-error:
did you try a "update-modules" ? _________________ boris64.net 200x / visit my desktop / try these tiny kernel patches |
