Hey everyone. I all of a sudden, after rebooting the machine, recieved the following message:

fsck.ext2: Is a directory while trying to open /

After that, it tells me that my filesystem may be corrupt, and puts me in it as read-only. However, I can still mount that filesystem read-write, just like normal, when I am not trying to boot from it. And, I even recreated the filesystem after tarring up everything, and put everything back into it; thus, I know it's a clean filesystem that simply mirrors my old one. Does anyone know what's going on? My /etc/fstab is fine. I don't know what to do. This is my primary machine :( Thanks in advance.

James

that error message comes from trying to run fsck on a directory instead of a device (like /dev/hda). if you havent specified to run fsck yourself you might have to start looking into startup scripts etc.
