i am trying to export some open office drawings as png, jpg, or svg's
SVG works but is insufficient for my purposes.
JPG and PNG both cause a "lockup" I've never seen the like of
the screen becomes black, the framebuffer/console "_" cursor appears at the top left but my X cursor remains where it is. It is Imposable to Ctr+Alt+F# to fix or even diagnose the problem.

I'm assuming that no other function of any other program does this, and that you've compiled LibreOffice rather than use libreoffice-bin. If so, try unmerging libreoffice and emerging libreoffice-bin. Openoffice and libreoffce have always had "fragile" ebuilds and I stopped using the source versions long ago in favor of the much more stable and reliable binary packages. I love compiling stuff on Gentoo, but I'm glad for binary packages in a few cases (Thunderbird and Firefox being the other binaries I use consistently).
