I'm trying to install Gentoo on my laptop (benq p52 with Turion X2 TL-52) but booting "install-amd64-minimal-20130516.iso" gives me only login prompt instead of normal live shell:
Code:
(none)login

install-x86-minimal-20130423.iso works fine (boots directly to live shell) but I want to install 64 version.
What should I do?

You can post errors ; as if it doesn't work when it should, there must be an error somewhere :)
But it's not something I (and i think everyone) didn't really want when installing a new OS. So just ignore errors and gentoo stuff will see and fix that for you soon or later.

But as "fixed soon" could still be too much to wait, you should know gentoo doesn't really have any install cd, gentoo provide one because everyone expected one.
To install your amd64 version of gentoo, you need classic linux tools in 64bits, this mean any 64bits livecd (linux of course) will do it, upto you to use the one you wish (sabayon, ubuntu...).
Have a look at the handbook, you will discover that yourself, the highest part is just unpacking the stage file and chrooting after that, that's why you could use any livecd that is able to let you do that.
There's also some other flavor, like system rescue cd that is gentoo too, or the dvd, i don't have links for them, someone could tell you where to download them, but as i said, it wouldn't provide you anything more than any livecd : a working env to unpack and chroot to install gentoo.

Oh I get it now, thank you. This indeed can be little confusing for Gentoo newbie like me that there's actually no "proper" install cd. I'll try from my 64 debian live then.
As to errors, I don't know how to provide them since after boot there's only:
Code:
(none)login:

And of course I can't actually log in (root/toor, root/gentoo, gentoo/gentoo didn't work  )
Earlier during boot procedure I didn't see any error messages.

I can hardly concentrate on your post cause this creepy owl keeps staring at me :P

Better not fail else the owl will catch you ;)
Just don't care about the error, debian would do it perfectly.

Tractor Girl ...

someone else reported the exact same issue, with the exact same cd, on #gentoo only minutes ago, so I imagine this is an issue with the CD. If you have time please report it as a bug on b.g.o ... if it hasn't been reported yet.

As has been said (most) any CD can be used as a boot/install disk, all that is required is the disk has 'chroot' and you can aquire an IP address ... and don't worry about the owl, unless your a mouse or some small bird :)

Good to know this wasn't my laptop's fault :)
BTW the very same cd works well for me in virtualbox.
As to owls, do not forget about this  :

there is a man in a smiling bag, the owls are not what they seem ... and of course, if that makes no sense then there's always a nice slice of cherry pie :)

-neX- ... on gentoo's bugzilla, which is bugs.gentoo.org (aka, "b.g.o")
