|

what'd i mess up this time?! I just wanted to test my config file for x prior to launching x/gnome.
issue: ./startx from /usr/X11R6/bin
I get:
./startx: xauth: command not found
./startx: xauth: command not found
./startx: xauth: command not found
./startx: xauth: command not found
./startx: xinit: command not found
./startx: xauth: command not found
I recently had gentoo installed on a seperate partition to dual boot with win2k, and recently killed off the win2k partition. originally, x was working great (along with kde and gnome). now, with the entire hd dedicated to linux, things are kinda messed up.
Anyone have any ideas? |

logout and log back in... your environment variables haven't updated themselves...

I had this same problem last night - never did try logging out and back in. (Doh! I never thought of it) I will try this tonight and I'm sure it will fix the problem. Do either of you know, though - what file holds these environment variables for X (I don't think it's XF86config, initrc or .bashrc because I am fairly familiar with these files and don't recall seeing it there before. But maybe I'm wrong.) Also, is there a command to print the current environment variables at the console? Thanks! |

It should be something under /etc/profile.d/

I have a quick question. In Slackware when you run xf86config and finish your configuration and creates a file called XF86Config.new in roots home directory. You then have to copy this file to /etc/X11/XF86Config-4. Ultimately that will copy the file to /etc/X11/ and rename it to XF86Config-4. Without doing this startx will error out with "no screens found".
Do you need to do anything like this with Gentoo when you configure X. |

No . But read the excellent desktop configuration guide from the gentoo website and you will know what to do. |

That's exactly the problem that I'm having now. But, there is no xf86config.new file in the root home directory.
The desktop guide doesn't address this problem. Any ideas on how to resolve it?

If you're still looking to create your XF86Config to work from, go:
