i have a custom firmware 3.55 and patched it with some free space to add gentoo on.i have a linux bootloader and a special file for kboot to boot gentoo.i can install debian at the moment but gentoo is the only distro/os i have worked with so i feel quite lost in other distros/os.everything is good to go for me to get gentoo on my ps3 except for the gentoo livecd for ps3 it self. |

I assume that you can boot the foreign cd, mount the hard drive's gentoo partition(s), and then install gentoo. ps3 was easier 5 yrs ago. _________________ Defund the FCC. |

i have got two options to boot.one is is a debian default boot wich i understan is a file in the ps3 boot program (kboot) and that file can be modified to fit gentoo or be replaced to boot the cd or a usb stick.the other option i a promt with busybox but i havent got that far with it.what is foreign cd?.
This is the second option http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EbxZEEqJoyg wich i whould like to do it but i stuck with ./create_hdd_region.sh
the first option is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q8w6h8SBA1A

If you can backup/replace the rootfs on your PS3 easily, then you can experiment safely. Don't be afraid to run emerge for upgrading
edit: That said, the very old kernel from an old livecd (maybe it was really from 2007) is not compatible with the modern userland. So if you install from the old livecd (both old kernel and old userland), be sure to upgrade the kernel first. In order to avoid the installation pitfalls (and to help some other person), I prepared a snapshot for a working kernel and userland back in 2010. It is still available here : http://ssvb.name/files/20101016-ps3/ (and you have found it already as you mentioned in in a private message). Not sure if it is useful nowadays though, but you may give it a try if everything else fails. |

hi all
today i got gentoo on my ps3 and now i am trying to get it to boot and need some help.
I have a boot entry and the kernel starts with no panic but it stops.
i get a message :
!! Block device /dev/ps3dd1 is not a vaild root device..
!!The root device is unspecified or not detected.
Pleace specify a device to boot. or "shell" for a shell...
i have looked in /dev and there is no /dev/ps3dd1.i just find sda,sdb but no 1 after.i hope you understand..
regards hedmo
Edit:when i boot the livecd gentoo does not find my linux partition. |

I also was able to got Red-Ribbon to work on the ps3.
Also Ubuntu and Debian-wheezy too.
So under normal circumstances, i would never give Gentoo even a try on my ps3, to me it is an ugly "distribution".
But in this case i tried an outdated DVD, called Megabox 2.1.
Unfortunally, Megabox was based on Gentoo..
I received the same errors as you.
In this case, i think this is because of the then usable structure of the otheros-feature on the ps3.
The 7th spu jailed the ps3 against linux and provided an environment for it.
Now the device-names are no longer valid, the device ps3dd1 also does`nt existst in my /dev folder.
I tried a newer kernel made by Glevand, which worked fine with debian, but was not able to extract it.
I can`t tar -xJf the *.xz file.
Regards. |

I was able o unpack the glevand-kernel with debian on the ps3.
With his kernel i was able to bring Megabox to work on my ps3/Fw 3.55 glev. .
So this should be the case for a normal gentoo-install too.
The result however was poor, Megabox seemed to be a chubby dist.
Not bad for normal circumstances, terribly slow with the only 2xx Mbytes of Ram on the ps3.
Red Ribbon 7 is now installed on my ps3.
