When I first installed and ran fluxbox (just startx at the command prompt with exec fluxbox in my .xinitrc file) it came up as a black screen and when I clicked I got a "blackbox" menu. I checked my menu file ~/.fluxbox/menu and it was empty. Someone told me in another thread to emerge commonbox-styles and commonbox-styles-extras to get the default menu file, but that didn't do it either.

I copied the general syntax of the menu file off someone's post here, and exited then reentered flxubox, but it still comes up as blackbox. It seems to refuse to use its own menu file. Any ideas?

Where do you put the menu file and what does it look like? Mine works and it goes something like this:
Code:
bash$ cat ~/.fluxbox/menu
[begin] (Box)

[submenu] (Browsers)
        [exec] (opera) {env QT_XFT=true opera}
        [exec] (mozilla) {mozilla}
        [exec] (lynx) {xterm -title lynx -fg white -bg black -e lynx}
[end]

[submenu] (Editors)
        [exec] (nedit) {nedit}
        [exec] (vim) {vim -g}
        [exec] (Gringotts)      {gringotts}
[end]

........BlaBlaBlah.........more programs......

[submenu] (Settings)
        [workspaces]   (Workspace List)
[submenu] (Styles) {Choose a style...}
        [stylesdir] (/usr/share/commonbox/styles)
[end]

        [include] (/usr/share/commonbox/imagebgmenu)
        [include] (/usr/share/commonbox/solidbgmenu)
        [config] (Configure)
        [reconfig] (Reload config)
[end]

        [restart] (Restart)
        [exit] (Exit)
[end]

Specify your menu in ~/.fluxbox/init like so

Code:
session.menuFile: ~/.fluxbox/menu

Thanks guys. I tried a few things and couldn't figure it out, so I re-emerged and it worked. :roll:

Ahh well. At least it works.

I have a similar problem, but it is sort of strange because I have currently three other computers with the exact same fluxbox setup and it works on them ... I have installed gentoo on my computer at uni and fluxbox seems ok, but it does not seem to be refreshing the configuration automatically. If I make a change to the menu file and then right click the menu does not reflect the changes until I click on the restart button in the menu, but at home it works fine and changes automatically. ... btw the same goes for changing the background with bbrb ... I need to actually restart fluxbox before the background changes. ...

Any suggestions?

As far as the whole background thing goes you can use the command: fbsetbg imagefile.xxx
That will change the background right after you enter it. For the menu I would just check your config files. See if mabye you have it set to automatically update at changes on your other computers. I dont know how you make it change automatically. It only loads the configuration and menu files when you first start it or restart it, or thats what it does by default anyway.
