I'm running a new VM, on a kernel built from gentoo-sources-3.8.13 via genkernel, with no changes to the stock kernel build settings. Kernel build command line was:
Code:
genkernel --lvm --integrated-initramfs --save-config --install --ramdisk-modules --symlink --bootloader=grub --busybox --compress-initramfs all
When I emerge the firehol package, the build completes successfully, but throws these warnings:
Code:
 *   CONFIG_IP_NF_TARGET_LOG:    is not set when it should be.
 *   CONFIG_IP_NF_TARGET_MASQUERADE:     is not set when it should be.
 *   CONFIG_IP_NF_TARGET_REDIRECT:       is not set when it should be.
 *   CONFIG_NETFILTER_XT_MATCH_OWNER:    is not set when it should be.
 *   CONFIG_NF_CONNTRACK_ENABLED:        is not set when it should be.
 *   CONFIG_NF_NAT:      is not set when it should be.
 *   CONFIG_NF_NAT_FTP:  is not set when it should be.
 *   CONFIG_NF_NAT_IRC:  is not set when it should be.

I've run into issues like this before with other packages. In some cases it's easy enough to just run 'make menuconfig', search for the parameter, and turn it on; sometimes searching for the setting is easy enough, but navigating to it is tedious and error-prone (I wish the search interface in menuconfig had a "go to this setting" feature). Sometimes the precise setting doesn't even appear as an option. For example, right now I find that 'CONFIG_IP_NF_TARGET_LOG' doesn't show up.

Given the time it takes to run the kernel config/build/test cycle, are there tools I might not know about for speeding things up?

More specifically to the firehol package, am I going about this the wrong way? Or might there be a mismatch between firehol and my kernel version?

Output from 'emerge --info':
