I was backing up some files from one machine to my Linux machine the other night. I was able to connect to my home directory on the Linux box, and see the share on my other machine, so I think I've got samba running fine. However, when browsing the Linux user's home directory, it seems to be kinda slow, and when using rsync to get files over (actually I used something called psync which is similar), it took forever! Like 2 hours to get a gig transferred. I should mention that I was doing this wirelessly. Is it just me, or has anyone else had this experience?

I deployed an 802.11b network (you know, eleven megabit) that never got over 30 KB/s from any workstation to another.

Depends on the NICs, the computers, the latency anticipated by your program, the environment, etc. Basically, don't expect to get 11 megabit unless you're in a perfect environment (which you aren't).

I guess you can't have it all. I'm happy that I can sit on the couch and back up from my portable to my desktop, though--even if it take 2 hours :D
