Which crypto algorithms do I need?

The kernel configuration includes a whole raft of crypto algorithms, some of which are obsolete, some I suspect are rarely used, and others which are current, pervasive and AFAIK required for other bits of kernel operation (famously, IPSEC). So, which are actually needed, and when (and why)?

I presume some variants of DES, AES and CRC, and some of the chaining modes.
