So what are the compile times everyone is getting out there?

Time to install? &
Time to compile KDE or Gnome?
System specs?

I've got an Abit IS7 with a P4 and 512 mb of ram. Before I was using a dual celeron 400 mhz system, and the compiling was gawdawfully long on that machine, that I don't want to post the times. Right now I'm running winxp (yeah I know it's ms, but don't hate me), but am wondering how long this stuff will take before I can actually start using it. I'm hoping that someone with a setup similar to my new system will post their compile time, so lets see how everyone else is doing.

I would suggest the GRP install to get you computer up and running. I've installed Gentoo several times now and can do it in less than an hour. Once you get the GRP version up and running, you can emerge the latest versions of KDE and Xfree in the background.

Can't really remember the exact compile time for me. But I think it took me about 1½ - 2 days for compiling a stage1 install + XFree + Gnome + Mozilla + MPlayer. Since I run ~x86 from start some errors stalled the compile time, and I didn't notice it after 1 hour or so. I just did a emerge -uvp world, and these packages took 4½ hours to compile:

Code:

[ebuild     U ] app-shells/bash-2.05b-r8 [2.05b-r7] +nls -build
[ebuild     U ] dev-lang/python-2.2.3-r2 [2.2.3-r1] +readline -tcltk -berkdb -bootstrap -build -doc
[ebuild     U ] sys-apps/portage-2.0.49-r13 [2.0.49-r7] -build
[ebuild     U ] sys-apps/baselayout-1.8.6.11 [1.8.6.10-r1] -bootstrap -build -static
[ebuild     U ] dev-lang/perl-5.8.1-r2 [5.8.1-r1] -berkdb -doc -gdbm -threads
[ebuild     U ] sys-devel/binutils-2.14.90.0.6-r6 [2.14.90.0.6-r3] +nls -bootstrap -build
[ebuild     U ] sys-libs/glibc-2.3.2-r6 [2.3.2-r1] +nls -pic -build -nptl
[ebuild     U ] sys-devel/gcc-3.3.1-r5 [3.3.1-r4] -static +nls -bootstrap -java -build +X

Well, I got the basic system from stage 1 (no X etc.) up and running in 24 hours, including time it had finished while I was still sleeping (or elsewhere). Installation of X took another 3 hours, and Gnome 2.4 took quite a while. OpenOffice (just out of interest) took 22 hours to compile.

All this is on a 1400MHz Duron with 128MB DDR RAM, and excludes the time taken for downloading any files (because I copied them over at 10Mbits per second from a mates computer at his place) except for emerge sync.

So then roughly over a day to get it installed and the gui up and running, and about another day to get openoffice. K!

48 hours on a Duron 1400.

Anyone else?

Any P4 users out there?

My system consists of an XP 2800+, 1gb of ram(dual 512mb ddr 333mhz) and a WD Raptor 10k rpm hd. I use ~x86.

/usr/portage/scripts/bootstrap.sh = 90 minutes
emerge system = 50 minutes
emerge xfree = 60 minutes
emerge gnome(xfree not included) = 2 hours
emerge wine = 6 minutes

We have enough of these threads asking about compile times. Search for it

You can also refer to the FAQ
