Bad. Bad. Bad.
I fried a processor on my dual amd mp 2000+ system this weekend, so i decided to get a new system (i had excess cash ;))

okay, so I now have a shiny new amd mp 2800+ dual processor system,
I try to boot this up with a live cd... First i try with teh straight up x86 one. No luck, teh smp kernel just goes blackscreen on me (i have framebuffer issues)
so i do smp-nofb, which appears to try, but then crashes saying something (I can't read it scrolls too fast and then locks up so i cant shift-pageup) ".. maybe you didnt set up dual cpu in your bios" or somethig similar, it kernel panics and freezes.

Hmm... not good, so i try the straight hit enter at the boot: prompt,
the framebuffer somehow works, and I am greeted with lines of segfaults during cpu and net card detection... wonderous... so i reboot try the single proc kernel again and the segfaults are in different places... *screw this* I thought, and downlaoded and burned a i686 live cd on my roommates computer and tried again
-EXACT SAME RESULTS AS MY PREVIOUS ATTEMPTS!-
I checked cpu temps in the bios, but they are under 40C each,

P L E A S E H E L P
I have homework to do and my roommate won't let me use his computer forever :(

boot: memtest

I like that one, bcos my com has faulty memory. Good thing linux allows you to set memory size. i have 128M, last 1M faulty, so i set mem=125M to be safe.

In your case, if you are segfaulting all the way, your memory stick is screwed if the problem lies in it.

ran a memtest all night, no errors at all, i have 1.5Gigs of registered ECC ram, so im guessing thats not the problem...

NOT HAVING A COMPUTER SUCKS

Yes, I tried installing Windows XP and Windows 2000 Professional.
Both bluescreened, however My old box used to do that as well, I dont think windows likes me :(

There is a nohotplug option and similar, I believe, in the boot CD? If it segfaults in hardware detection, disable it.
