This year, I went from a 3.9 GPA to about a 3.0 I also dropped 2/5 of the hours I was taking. WHY? GENTOO.
Gentoo is crack. Worse than crack. It's like heroin-impregnated crack double-dipped in LSD with a hearty dosage of hash oil on the side.
But Gentoo also = t3h r0x0rs. Why? Because, as I have mentioned 3.1415 times on other subjects, I used Linux for 4 years without knowing shit about it. Despite the fact that I've spent much more time installing and tweaking Gentoo than actually using it, I've learn frigging OODLES about Linux. Jeepers.
Just remember this: "Gentoo: It's not an operating system, it's a goddamn mental illness."
As I speak, I am coming here because OpenOffice keeps timing out and dying. Am I angry? Hell no. I have a demented smile on my face. Why? Because the spirits of people who gave up on Linux are in my head, and they talk to me, and they tell me everything is going to be okay. Everything, they say, is going to be alright. The voices love you just as much as they love me, and if you stay with Gentoo for just a few more days I'm sure you'll be hearing them too

YAY! I've got KDE. I had to cheat my x config tho... can't seem to do it myself. I used a combo of morphix x config + email and the "links" command to get it going.
Never give up, never surrender.
I can't get "KDM" to work, which is wierd, because "startx" works... "KDM" acts like the x config is messed up... suggestions?
the last log in my kdm.log

Frozensun,
If you ain't cheaten, you ain't tryen.
Local redneck saying.
Seriously, did you learn anything about configuring X and/or kde when you "cheated"? The way I look at it, is knowledge is power. the more you learn the more you realize how little you really know
Congrats on getting something else to work. (are you still going to quit on us?)

i am also a newbie with linux, less than 2 months, tried a few distros (made my laptop unbootable at least 50 times ) and then, yes, i heard of gentoo, d/l the iso and burned the cd-s. i was too afraid to install, and waited a couple of weeks.
the install took about 10 days ( ) even though i did a stage 3 GRP (or is it GPR ??). during that time, i printed over 500 pages of linux documentation from the net (on my other laptop, it hepls to have two...). i screamed when x finally started. (i believe it was at my third start-over-again install). but them i had to face another monster: kde. you don't want to know the pain and frustration. like somebody said on this thread, i took it all with a demented smile on my face, and skipped nights of sleep (did you think 10 days meant only days - hell no, it mas mostly days AND nights). well, i am proud of myself, i finally made it work, i ran like a dream, i could compile everything, and it was fast. i even slept 1whole days afterwards.
then i had the idea of making a backup of the whole system, so i don't have to reinstall again.... and i fucked it up !! something went wrong..... i deleted something, or i don't know what really happened. now i am running caldera open linux 3.1.1, which is a bit outdated, but i like it. i am addicted.
maybe one day i will do a LFS install - but that is not gentoo, isn't it?
preparing for another run at gentoo...... |
