Hello!
I do not know if is it related to gentoo / funtoo, but I would love to ask you about my problem - maybe somebody will help me figure it out.

I've got funtoo on my desktop and recently (without updating the world) I've seen a very strange behavior.
After few minutes of work the system hangs completely. It is not possible to move mouse pointer or do anything.
I was trying to update it from tty (without Xorg running), but in the middle of emerge it hanged one more time. Whats interesting - the cursor in tty blinks, but gives no response.

Could it be software or it is rather a hardware problem?
What could I do to diagnose it?

I would be very thankful for any help in this topic :)

If you suspect an hardware problem you can try running memtest for checking the RAM. You can find it on the System Rescue CD for example.

Thank you, I've tried running DELL diagnostics several times and the diagnostics hanged out (while chcecking CPU's memory), so I suppose it is hardware related issue.
Whats interesting, after many tries I've booted the system and it does not hang for an hour right now, so this is very strange :/

Hi,
if you have more than one memory module, you can run only one at a time, removing the others, to try to isolate the culprit module(s). If the Dell diagnostic fail, it's indicate that Linux, Gentoo or softwares can not be in cause, or it can be a combination of multiple factors.

If the garantie is valide, make check your Dell.

Logicien: Thank you, I'll check the memory modules. This box's got a lot of memory (64 Gb) and I had problems with memory before, so maybe that is the case (the memory was not completely discovered by system, but dell replaced on the beginning the mainboard then all the memory, and on the end the cpus and then everything started to work). The garantie passed several months ago :(
