Hi all,
Somehow the var/lib/init.d/ has been renamed to /var/lib/?init.d, its a 0 byte file and now when i boot, it gives me:
"For Gentoo Linux to function properly, "/var/lib/init.d/" need to exist.
Please mount your root partition read/write, and execute:
mkdir -p /var/lib/init.d
Give root password for maintenance:
enter root password for maintenance or to continue press ctrl+d.
I enter the root password, mount -rw /dev/hdc9 /root/disk, cd /root/disk
mkdir -p /var/lib/init.d
and I get "permission denied" cannot create directory
The /var/lib/?init.d/ file cannot me moved, list or anything as it gives me permission denied even as root.
There is nothing in logs to indicate as how this directory got screwed-up.
Is there anyway to restore it as i've spend a lot of time tunning this system.
Thanks a lot,
CEPi. |

Try rectifying the issue from within a LiveCD environment. Mount your partitions and chroot into your installation according to the relevant sections of the installation guide. It wouldn't hurt to fsck your root filesystem partition before you do that either. |

I've tryed it at no luck. Same problem - permission denied.
Usually from Live CD i have rescued always the systems, chroot etc etc always works. This time not, though i am amaized when it gives me permission denied with root .
Thx for the reply.

Hmm. Have you used the appropriate fsck tools to check the integrity of your filesystem? |

Finally, i forced jfs_fsck -f /dev/rootand it repared the whole thing. Just strange at why did it choose /var/lib/init.d/ to corrupt it....
Thanks for your help,
