Umm hello.

I am keen to get gentoo onto my spare hard disk in my XP machine, and i'm interested in doing the whole load (ie from stage 1).

Now at present my xp machine is connected to another Xp machine using the usual eth NICs. On the other box is the cable modem connected to the internet, and is "internet connection shared" thru windows.

What I would like to know is should I be able to connect to the internet through the shared connection on the windows box when I am installing gentoo?

I have a gigabyte GA-7vaxp ultra motherboard with onboard Realtek rtl8139 10/100 ethernet connector.

Many thanks

Yes, this is definetly possible, first, check what nameservers you use for internet. This can be found somewhere in the "stats" window of the NIC you use to connect to the internet. Writedown these and boot gentoo, then do the following, depending on if you use static or dynamic ip's.

- static (prefered):
# net-setup
Fill in you're ip address, the ip address of the WinXP machine by gateway, and one of the ip's you wrote down by nameserver.

- dynamic:
# dhcpcd eth0
# nano /etc/resolv.conf
add the following to resolv.conf:
Quote:

<ip from nameserver 1> nameserver
<ip from nameserver 2> nameserver

Good luck and enjoy!
Frank

It seems that I didn't need to do a thing. I turned my PC on with the liveCD in the drive, and when the gentoo installer started up, all of my network features worked perfectly without any effort!!

I'm really rather impressed with what I have seen of gentoo so far, especially the kernel config options with genkernel. And thank the lord we don't need no rpms!!! that was like a fibonacci sequence of dependencies that would make installing one program a day long hunt for libraries on the net!
