I have been trying to install the alsa drivers for the Sis 7012 chipset. I have set up alsa to use the intel8x0 driver. However, I have all the alsa-drivers compiled (as was suggested in some of the posts). Also, the settings of my kernel seem to be OK. When starting up alsa I get:
Code:
  * Initialising ALSA....
 * Starting sound driver: snd-intel8x0 /lib/modules/2.4.20-gentoo-r7/kernel/sound/pci/snd-intel8x0.o: init_module: No such device
Hint: insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including invalid IO or IRQ parameters.
You may find more information in syslog or the output from dmesg
/lib/modules/2.4.20-gentoo-r7/kernel/sound/pci/snd-intel8x0.o: insmod /lib/modules/2.4.20-gentoo-r7/kernel/sound/pci/snd-intel8x0.o failed
/lib/modules/2.4.20-gentoo-r7/kernel/sound/pci/snd-intel8x0.o: insmod snd-intel8x0 failed

It seems that somehow a driver for this card has been loaded already and that the device is used by that driver.
The relevant information from dmesg is:
Code:
PCI: Using ACPI for IRQ routing
...
Intel 810 + AC97 Audio, version 0.24, 19:21:22 Oct 13 2003
i810: SiS 7012 found at IO 0xd800 and 0xdc00, MEM 0x0000 and 0x0000, IRQ 11

i810_audio: Defaulting to base 2 channel mode.
i810_audio: Resetting connection 0
ac97_codec: AC97 Audio codec, id: ALC38(Unknown)
i810_audio: only 48Khz playback available.
i810_audio: AC'97 codec 0 supports AMAP, total channels = 2

It was suggested to use the AC97 module, but I don't know where to load it. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Your kernel seems to have the i810 module compiled in. Try recompiling the kernel with sound modules only.

You need soundcore, ac_97 and i8x0_sound or something like that (sorry, don't remember the exact names of the modules)

That's exactly what I thought. But I am sure that I compiled the kernel with the soundcore module only. Anyway, I recompiled the kernel with the soundcore module, and the ICH model (indeed the i8x0_audio module), which should work for my board. Still I cannot load this module (even when I load the soundcore module and the ac97 module before). The error is the same... So, either there is something that blocks it (but what???) or the kernels that I compile don't get installed -- I follow the instructions on the ALSA howto page to compile kernels. Furthermore, the kernel and modules compile without any problems. Any other suggestions? (for example, how to unload this driver?)

Code:
# modprobe i810_audio
/lib/modules/2.4.20-gentoo-r7/kernel/drivers/sound/i810_audio.o: init_module: No such device
Hint: insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including invalid IO or IRQ parameters.
You may find more information in syslog or the output from dmesg

/lib/modules/2.4.20-gentoo-r7/kernel/drivers/sound/i810_audio.o: insmod i810_audio failed

Maybe this helps?

After make bzImage, make modules, make modules_install -
did you copy your kernel to /boot/bzImage (or similar) ?

if using lilo, did you run lilo?

Did you compile into the kernel or as module? (Your wording is ambiguous)

If modprobe works, what keeps you from using sound?

THAT is exactly that little piece of information that was missing... Thanks a lot. I was booting my old kernel, which had the drivers build-in (no modules):
Code:

#uname -a
Linux telemachus 2.4.20-gentoo-r7 #1 Mon Oct 13 19:17:12 CEST 2003 i686 AMD Athlon(tm) Processor AuthenticAMD GNU/Linux

Just started with Gentoo :)
