How to get hotplug working on a VIA Epia-M Mini-ITX?

After some some false starts I got my Via Epia-M machine to boot Gentoo (using ac-sources) but can not get Hotplug to work (PCI and USB I suppose) which is somewhat inconvenient as it makes the system not detect certain devices.

Is there any way I can get this to work? Anybody got any experience with this sort of setup?

PS the symptoms are just a plain freeze when it comes to Hotplug during boot time.
