|
|
After install, when I try to boot, I get
[quote=Error]Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on hdb2[/quote]
The only thing I can think of that might be causing this problem is the fact that I'm using ReiserFS.
I've got ReiserFS compiled into the kernel (2.6.0-test7-bk5).
I'm passing the kernel the right root= argument
I'm able to mount /dev/hdb2 (and chroot to it) from the live cd.
How can I fix this??
Thanks,
harold |

Re-check your kernel config wether you have compiled in drivers for your IDE chipset too.
And reiserfs and the IDE driver may not be modular but must be in the kernel.
That's all I can think of now. _________________ Please put [SOLVED] in your topic if you are a moron. |

Yes, I have Reiser compiled in-in (ie. not as a module ).
As far as my IDE chipset, hmm, thought I had that too.
Any way I can check what chipset I have from the live cd?
(This is the basic live cd,btw)
Thanks,

you can check most of your hardware using dmesg or lspci. _________________ Please put [SOLVED] in your topic if you are a moron. |

I just recalled I once got a similar problem when I chose "Advanced partition selection" in the kernel config, but not the "PC BIOS (MSDOS Partition Table) support" option there.
You might want to check that too. _________________ Please put [SOLVED] in your topic if you are a moron. |

Doh!
I guess that's what you get for trying to config your kernel to fast
Thanks,

Does that mean that was it?
And yes, you shouldn't go thru it too fast, one time it bit me because they changed the order of the "binary support" (you know, the ELF, a.out, misc part) and I usually compile two of those as modules, not good if it's the wrong one.... _________________ Please put [SOLVED] in your topic if you are a moron. |

Yeah, that was it.
It wasn't that I was going through it a huge speed, but that I wanted to get as little in the kernel as possible since I wanted for little memory usage and (more importantly) short compile time.
The joys of Linux on old machines...
Thanks for your help. The "be sure to check the partition table type" warning is now permanately stuck in my brain. Even though I can hardly remember what I ate this morning
