|
|
Hi, I am doing a stage 1 gentoo install, but I can't get past the system build portion because every time i try I get about a quarter of the way done and then the process fails with an error message:
Code: | Failed patch: 200_all_4.3.0-ipv6-server-patch!
/var/tmp/portage/xfree-4.3.0-r3/tmp/200_all_4.3.0-ipv6-server.partch-17040.out |
Does anybody have a clue what this means and how to get over it? Is it significant that - as far as I'm aware I haven't even gotten close to emerging Xfree yet?
What is wrong with this package that it would make it try to patch files which I assume do not even exist yet? Should I simply emerge Xfree (even though I am at a very early point in my install) or is this likely to cause more problems than it will solve?
Any input is appreciated.

xfree should not be part of "emerge system" unless you used too many USE flags. Try this instead. Code: | # USE="-*" emerge system |

Erm... ok... but what is 'too many use flags'? I have always been confused by this... Pretty much most of the official use variables I have seen sound like a really good idea and i am often left thinking that it would be good to have the best all round support possible. Nonetheless my primary interest in Linux - and in Gentoo as a whole is simply for music, movies, web surfing,, writing emails and so on... So I wonder what would I really need to make sure I had the best possible support for these functions? Also, what happens if I install something and there is no explicit support listed for it in my Use flags?
What i wonder is 'too many' or indeed 'too few' use variables?
It would be nice if there was a script I could use that would ask me the likely uses for my system and generate a set of valid use variables from this...

The "emerge system" should be installing (at least in theory) just the bare essentials for a working Gentoo system. Once you have booted into your basic system, then you set your USE flags and emerge all the rest of the software you are interested in using.
ps. Portage's --verbose (-v) flag is great if you want to see which USE flags are in effect for any given package.
Code: | # emerge -pv <name of package> |
