|
|
Anyone know of a sure way to figure out when a Gentoo system was first booted (install date)?
I'm pretty good at breaking OS installations, making reinstalls a 6 month ritual. But I think I may be on a role with Gentoo here.
My only idea was to look at file-mod times, but they're all over the board and some of them I'm pretty sure are too old.
Ideas?

upnix,
If the hostname has not been changed since install, look at the date on /etc/hostname

Hmm, that seems like it could be right; Oct. 4th 2002. Just missed the 1 year anniversary.
Excellent, thanks NeddySeagoon. |

I also installed Gentoo about a year ago, but I redid it in the summer because I was really bored, haha |

Check your first entry in /var/log/emerge.log. It should say something like "Started emerge on: Nov 06, 2002"

My /etc/chostname is dated the 9th December 2003 .
Yeah, I screwed up the date setting when first installing.... so I guess teh exact date is lost forever (it was about 6 weeks ago). |

Code: | 1055380094: Started emerge on: Jun 12, 2003 01:08:14
1055380094: *** emerge sync |
This is a long time for me. And the only reason I did that in June was becasue I got a new P4 and mobo (had to recompile with new CFLAGS!), and my install before that was probably just as old if not older. Gentoo is awesome _________________ Ban Reality TV!

But how old is an Installation if you updated from Gentoo 1.2 -> 1.4rc1 which is the case for me? - I'm sure that I changed my hostname. A better idea would be to look at the creation date of a directory like "/lib" or "/boot" IMHO. _________________ Dort wo schwarzer Rauch aufsteigt, sich alsbald ein Fehler zeigt.
