There is no "right way" to do maintenance. As you said, if it isn't broken, then there's no need to fix it. Obviously, security patches might have some bearing on your upgrade frequency, but even then, the final decision is up to you.
Coming from a debian world, there are lots of people still using hamm and slink, which are ancient releases, but they do the job that they were built for.
