Do I understand correctly that it would not be possible for a KVM/Qemu guest to make use of a PCI device from the host machine unless VT-d is supported by the CPU of the physical machine, assuming an Intel CPU? |

Yes, you need VT-d support on the CPU and more importantly also on the motherboard. While most modern CPUs support VT-d (the notable exception being the k series chips such as the 4770k), many modern motherboards still lack VT-d support. _________________ Game! - Where the stick is mightier than the sword! |

Is there any way to test if a mother board fully supports VT-d, WITHOUT a VT-d capable CPU?
I bought the wrong CPU model, which is i5-2500K.
I'm considering to change it to i5-2500 perhaps.
And my mother board is MSI-Z68A-G43 (B3).
Although it says VT-d support in the spec document, but it's not on the IOMMU supporting hardware list.
I want to be certain with my board before the CPU change. |

If there isn't a bios switch for iommu then it probably isn't supported (complete implementation) on the motherboard,
I swapped out my old MSI one for an ASUS one for that very reason.
What does "grep -i iommu /var/log/dmesg" report? _________________ UM780, 6.12 zen kernel, gcc 13, openrc, wayland |
