The boot process stops with the message

hde: attached ide-disk driver

hde is my only HD and its an S-ATA one.

I have an Asus P4P800D M/B and a 2.8P4HT and have got the P4 specific version of Gentoo

Any help.

As a side note Knoppix 3.3 live cd boots OK and finds the HD ok so I know the HD can be recognised and found.

I've noticed some posts about S-ATA, maybe that's the problem, but I wonder why your HD is hde where it's normally hda.

why hde - never thought of that I automatically thought a,b reserved for floppy, d,e - cd-rw, dvd-rom so the next letter is e.

I will have a better look when I get home but its got me thinking the BIOS setup for the IDE is 'enhanced' which basically lets me have 3 IDE channels (2 normal and 1 SATA with each having a master and slave - 6 drives in total) but the manual only tells me about Windows OS's and enhanced mode only works in 2k and XP (as far as I can remember) maybe I have to reduce the M/B IDE functions back to a basic level.

I suggest you boot from the LiveCD first and note the output of
Code:
cfdisk
If it returns an error you may repeat this with
Code:
cfdisk /dev/hdx
where x=a,b,c,... until you get a reply. Then you'll know what your device name is.

BTW Linux always starts with hda. The convention you mention is DOS/Windows.

Have not had a chance to debug what is going on but got a copy of SuSE Live 9.0 on a magazine cover and that does the same thing hda and hdb get assigned to the CD and DVD rom then it jumps to hde for the SATA hard disk

Yes sorry I was a little too hasty in my answer. I don't use serial ATA yet, but it figures that hda..d are reserved for the 4 possible IDE devices and that other devices start with hde... I cannot tell you for sure however.

As I said before there a BIOS settings to set the 'mode' of the IDE / SATA channels.

I wanted to get at least one live Linux working to use as a rescue disk and Knoppix works and probably during the holidays I will debug whats going on.
